Root Canal Treatment
Root canal Treatment (endodontics)
Commonly referred to as root canal therapy endodontic treatment is used to save severely infected teeth which would previously have been extracted. This infection generally attacks the pulp of the tooth, located in the root canal of the tooth. It is this area which contains the nerve tissues and blood needed to support the tooth through its development and is also the reason why this infection is particularly painful and requires urgent treatment.
Up until recently the infected tooth generally required extraction, however nowadays only the infected pulp is removed. The root canal is then cleaned, disinfected and sealed with a filling to finish the treatment, stopping any further discomfort or infection. In the majority of cases the tooth retains its functionality, durability and appearance.
