Dental Veneers in Wollongong

Transform Your Smile With Veneers

Dental veneers are a type of cosmetic treatment that can greatly improve the aesthetics of your teeth and transform your smile. Veneers are finely sculpted shells which are made to fit over teeth perfectly and then bond with the teeth’s surface to stay in place. As a quick and versatile solution to masking imperfections, veneers can easily change both the shape and colour of your teeth. Veneers are used to treat chipped, discoloured or misaligned teeth and are a popular choice to achieve a natural-looking smile.

What are Dental Veneers?

The most common are porcelain, which are custom-made to fit each tooth and are then bonded to the front of each tooth. The alternative are composite resin veneers,

which are applied one layer at a time to slowly cover the existing tooth with each layer being shaped and cured as it is added.

Each type of dental veneer comes with its own advantages and disadvantages

Porcelain veneers – porcelain is more durable, natural-looking and stain-resistant than composite. While treatment time is longer, as they need to be crafted by off-site by specialist technicians, they are designed to fit perfectly. One of the disadvantages, however, is that if they crack or chip the whole veneer needs to be replaced.

Composite veneers – as these veneers are made on-the-spot by your dentist, they can be fitted in one appointment, thereby reducing the treatment time. However, the results aren’t as natural looking, and they are more likely to stain.

Who are Veneers Suitable For?

Veneers are a suitable treatment for many people and many dental problems. While it is a cosmetic treatment that isn’t able to correct the likes of badly misaligned teeth, overbites or underbites, it can cover up less serious issues and significantly change the aesthetics of your teeth. What’s more, the treatment offers a less intrusive and faster solution than the likes of crowns and braces.

Dental veneers can help

To be a suitable candidate for dental veneers, you’ll need to know what you want to achieve, have good overall dental health and have a sufficient layer of enamel on your teeth. If you have decay or gum disease, it will need to be treated before veneers can be fitted. Also, if you are prone to teeth grinding, veneers may not be suitable as they can break or even detach.

How are Porcelain Veeners Applied?

The first step in the process of having veneers is for you to come into the practice for a consultation. We’ll need to understand what you want to achieve and why. If veneers seem like a sensible way to achieve it, we’ll take x-rays and perform an oral examination to ensure they will be suitable.

If veneers seem like a sensible way to achieve it, we’ll take x-rays and perform an oral examination to ensure they will be suitable.

Once we’ve assessed your suitability for veneers, it’s time for us to prepare your teeth. This will involve buffing the enamel surface to create a space for the veneer. The veneer will replace the thin layer of enamel that is removed, ensuring your tooth is no thicker once it’s in place. Removing the shiny outer layer of the enamel also creates a better surface for the veneer to bond to. At this point, the dentist will check the colour, size and fit needed and will take impressions of your teeth. Once the dentist has made impressions, they will be sent to the lab technician. Your teeth will be made specifically for you, ensuring they are the perfect fit and colour.

The final step is to fit your veneers. The dentist will hold them in place to check the shape and colour and to ensure you’re happy before he permanently fixes them in place. Once he’s happy everything is correct, he’ll thoroughly clean your teeth, cement the veneer in place, and use a curing light to harden the bond. And, finally, the surface of the veneers will be polished to give a natural look.

The whole process takes a matter of weeks from your first consultation. And, once they’re in place, veneers can last around ten years or longer. All you need to do is maintain an effective oral hygiene routine and, of course, schedule regular trips to your dentist for check-ups and cleans.
